Data Visualization: Home

A definition

Data visualization is the use of tools to represent data in the form of charts, maps, animations, or any other appropriate graphical format. This allows data to be "seen" in a different way thus allowing for increased understanding of patterns that might not otherwise be visible in their raw data format.

Visualization is more than representation, it also encompasses the various tools and skills needed to transform data for various media. This includes concepts such as visual literacy (the ethical and deliberate choice of utilizing visual elements to communicate a message), as well as knowing which graphical format will yield the best results for your type of data, and finally effectively utilizing programs such as OpenRefine to perform the technical computations needed to bring your data to life.
