CPSY Counseling Psychology: Dissertations

Finding Dissertations

  • ProQuest Dissertations and Theses (aka Digital Dissertations) - With more than 2.4 million entries, the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses (PQDT) database is the most comprehensive collection of dissertations and theses in the world. ProQuest's UMI Dissertation Publishing group publishes more than 65,000 new dissertations and theses each year, with weekly updates to the PQDT database. Over 930,000 dissertations and theses are available in PDF format, and most include free twenty-four page previews.
  • OSU Electronic Theses and Dissertations - An OSU Digital Collection containing dissertations and theses done at Oklahoma State University, published from 1962 to the present. Some EDTs require OSU login.

  • British Library EThOS - The British Library's collection of electronic dissertations published in the United Kingdom. Not all are freely available online, but a fair number are.

Tips for Searching Digital Dissertations

There are a couple of tricks you can use in Digital Dissertations to search for dissertations in a variety of manners.

  • To search for OSU dissertations, in the first search box, enter Oklahoma State University and from the dropdown menu next to it, select School Name/Code
  • To search for dissertations by advisor, in the first search box, enter your advisor's name and from the dropdown menu next to it, select Advisor (note: you may want to search by university name first, then advisor if your advisor has a very common name such as John Smith, etc.)
  • To search for dissertations done at OSU in a specific department, first search by OSU as listed in bullet point one above, then in the second search box, enter the department name, and from the dropdown menu beside it, select Department (Note: be aware that OSU departments change names occasionally, and what the department is called today might not be what it was called 10 years ago.)

Dissertations

Dissertations are a product of earning a Ph.D. degree from a university, such as OSU. Dissertations reflect many years of scholarship on a topic. Many undergraduates who are considering graduate school can benefit from looking at dissertations. Graduate students frequently need to seek out dissertations in preparation for their own dissertation research.

If you can locate a dissertation on your topic, you can look at the review of literature section to possibly shake out other resources you may want to consult in your research.
