Awards for Young Adult Books & Media

alex awardsThese are some of the many awards given for young adult (YA) literature. The Newbery Medal, Pura Belpre Awards, Coretta Scott King Awards, Orbis Pictus Awards (NCTE), and other children's literature prizes often include YA books (click here for a list of awards in children's literature). Acronyms of sponsors listed below.

ALAN Award - honors someone with outstanding contributions to adolescent literature. Recipient may be a publisher, author, librarian, scholar, editor, or servant to the organization (ALAN / NCTE)  

Alex Award -  given to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults (YALSA / ALA)

(Margaret A.) Edwards Award -- for lifetime achievement in YA literature (YALSA / ALA)  

Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults - one of the newest awards, begun in 2010  YALSA / ALA)

(Willliam C.) Morris Award -  honors a debut book published by a first-time author writing for teens (YALSA / ALA)

Odyssey Award - best audiobook produced for children and/or young adults (ALSC & YALSA / ALA)

(Michael L.) Printz Award -- for literary excellence in YA literature (YALSA / ALA)

Mike Morgan and Larry Romans Children's and Young Adult Literature Award 

Teens' Top Ten - 10 popular picks voted by teens each April  (YALSA / ALA)

USBBY Outstanding International Books (grades 6-8 and 9-12)

Young Adults' Choice Award --  for outstanding books chosen by young adults (IRA)
