Awards for Young Adult Books & Media
These are some of the many awards given for young adult (YA) literature. The Newbery Medal, Pura Belpre Awards, Coretta Scott King Awards, Orbis Pictus Awards (NCTE), and other children's literature prizes often include YA books as well.
- ALAN Award - honors someone with outstanding contributions to adolescent literature. Recipient may be a publisher, author, librarian, scholar, editor, or servant to the organization (ALAN / NCTE)
- Alex Award - given to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults (YALSA / ALA)
- (Margaret A.) Edwards Award - honors an author, as well as a specific body of his or her work, for significant and lasting contribution to young adult literature (YALSA / ALA)
- Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults - one of the newest awards, begun in 2010, for the best nonfiction book published for young adults (YALSA / ALA)
- (Willliam C.) Morris Award - honors a debut book published by a first-time author writing for teens (YALSA / ALA)
- Odyssey Award - best audiobook produced for children and/or young adults (ALSC & YALSA / ALA)
- (Michael L.) Printz Award - for literary excellence in YA literature (YALSA / ALA)
- Mike Morgan and Larry Romans Children's and Young Adult Literature Award - for English language books that have exceptional merit relating to the LGBTQIA+ experience (ALA)
- Teens' Top Ten - 10 popular picks voted by teens each April (YALSA / ALA)
- USBBY Outstanding International Books - an honor list of international books for young people (grades 6-8 and 9-12)
- Young Adult Favorites Award - for outstanding books chosen by young adults (ILA / CBC)
