XML/XSL Walkthrough for ETDs

Separating metadata from xml's, made easy!
  • Place XML files, from UMI download, into a new folder
  • Copy "etd_walkthrough_dspace_2018-04-23.xsl", "collection.xsl", "ETDlist.xml", “etds-template.csv”, "prefix and suffix for xml runthrough.xlsx" and paste into the folder
  • Use "Directory Printer" on the folder to get the list of the file names. Make sure to filter for just XML files. Save the file, inside the folder with the folder name and this suffix: xml_file_list
    • This is what the “Directory Printer” should looked like:

  • Open "prefix and suffix for xml runthrough.xlsx"
  • Insert the file names from the print list and into column B
  • Save as "list.xlsx"
  • Select all in "list.xlsx" and copy into a blank Notepad
  • Select one of the tab characters and hit Ctrl + H, paste in the "Find what:" field, leave the "Replace with:" field empty, click "Replace All"
  • Copy/paste the results into the "ETDlist.xml" file
  • Open "collection.xsl", click Ctrl + Shift + C, or the wrench symbol for Configure Transformation Scenario(s)
  • Click on "ETDlist transformation into collection.xml" and click "Edit"
  • Under the "XSLT" tab, the "XML URL" field needs to be "ETDlist.xml"
  • Under the "Output" tab, "Output file", click "Save as", the file name should be "collection.xml"
  • Click "OK", click "Apply associated (1)"
  • Open " etd_walkthrough_dspace_2018-04-23.xsl ", click Ctrl + Shift + C, or the wrench symbol for Configure Transformation Scenario(s)
  • Click on "Walkthrough to html->excel" and click "Edit"
  • Under the "XSLT" tab, the "XML URL" field needs to be "collection.xml"
  • Under the "Output" tab, "Output file", click "Save as", the file name should be "result.html"
  • Click "OK", click "Apply associated (1)"
  • Rename the “etds-template.csv” folder to “etds-(the folder name that the files are in).csv”
  • Select all in the “result.html” and copy
  • Open .csv file and paste the results in the former template
