Basic Cuttering

The Cutter number helps to ensure that each book has a unique identification number. This guide gives instructions for basic Cuttering.

I. Title Main Entries

  1. No 1xx present
  1. Use the first significant word after any initial article
  1. DO NOT use a work mark

  1. Cutter for the first word of the 130 field
    1. DO NOT use work mark
  1.  If the title is a translation, add the appropriate letter for the language named in the ≠l [language of translation]

II. Dates

  1. Add dates to the call number for new editions
    1. Anything other than 1st editions will receive a date
    2. Check to see if we have the earlier edition(s) and note the call number for earlier edition(s) on the work card
  2. If the edition statement says something like “First American edition,” “First Da Capo Press edition,” check title page verso for earlier versions
  1. If there is more than one date in the 260 field, put the most recent date in the call number

I. Main Entry Stays the Same

  1. Title of new edition changes: Take the workmark from the original title, and add the date of publication.

II. Main Entry Changes

  1. If the title main entry changes with the new edition, cutter by the title of the new entry.

E.g.:

III. Author Changes

  1. Changed author: if the first named author changes in between editions, cutter for the main entry, and add a work mark and date.

IV. Main Entry Author/Title Sequence Change

  1. If the main entry changes from author to title, or from title to author, cutter for the new main entry, and add the date.

V. Two Editions Published the Same Year

  1. Cutter the first one normally, Then add the letter "a" to the date (NOT the workmark) of the second edition.
