Advancing your Career with Social Media: Considerations for selecting a platform
Resources for students and researchers interested in using social media platforms for networking, information management and promoting their research through nontraditional channels.
Which Social Media Platform is the Right One?
Selecting the right platform will depend on your field and what you want to get out of participating. LinkedIn, ResearchGate, ORCID and Mendeley require less time commitment and can be relatively one way. Blogging, Twitter and YouTube benefit from regular content development and responses to posts and comments. Tools such as Pinterest and Wakelet make it possible to cache pictures, links, bookmarks and ideas to follow up on later.
It is important to identify what you wish to accomplish with your social networking. Watch this video from the American Society for Microbiology. It will guide you through the process of listing your goals and then clarifying your message.
