Citation/Style Manuals: Citation Style Guides

Style guides to consult

Many academic organizations and disciplines outline their own styles of how to cite sources and format research papers.  You may have heard of or used some of these styles before, especially APA, MLA, and Chicago. There are hundreds (even thousands, when you get into variations) of styles, each with their own odd quirks. While this can seem daunting, the most important thing to remember is that making an attempt to cite is far more important than getting the particular style exactly correct. Even expert researchers who have used a certain style for years can be unfamiliar with how to cite a certain type of source, or confused by a recent update to the style manual.

The print and digital manuals listed below can help you explore the details for some of these common styles.

You can also use Zotero to help manage your citations and format your bibliographies according to a variety of different style guides.
