Between 1981 and 1985, Dr. Gloria Valencia-Weber and Dr. Glenna Matthews, both faculty members at Oklahoma State University at the time, conducted 17 interviews with Dr. Angie Debo. The interviewers developed questions that covered many aspects of Dr. Debo's life and philosophy. Included in the interviews are discussions of her writing and relationship with publishers, her family and hometown, her employment, her work on establishing Indian land and water rights, and on the history of Oklahoma. These interviews are an important source of information for Angie Debo's philosophies on several topics.

Angie Debo was born in Beattie, KS, in 1890, moved to Marshall, Oklahoma Territory, with her family in 1899, taught in rural schools at age 16, graduated from Marshall High School in 1913 and from the University of Oklahoma (OU) in 1918 with a degree in history. She taught history at Enid High School for four years, received a master's degree from the University of Chicago in 1924, taught at West Texas State Teachers College from 1924-1933, received a doctorate from OU in 1933, served as curator of the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, Canyon, TX, 1933-1934. In subse- quent years she was primarily a researcher and writer of books on the Five Civilized Tribes, Geronimo, and the history of Native Americans and of Oklahoma. She also was a teacher, pastor, and director of the Federal Writers Project in Oklahoma. From 1947-1955 she was curator of maps at Oklahoma A&M College. After retirement in 1955 she wrote, lectured, traveled, researched family histories, served on the boards of directors of the Oklahoma Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union and the Association on American Indian Affairs, made surveys for the Indian Rights Association, and lobbied for land rights for Indians in Alaska and for water rights for the Havasupai and Pima in Arizona. She authored nine books, edited three, co-authored another, wrote many chapters, articles, and forewords, and presented numerous papers on Native Americans and Oklahoma history.

Gloria Valencia-Weber was a faculty member in the Psychology Department at Oklahoma State University at the time the interviews were conducted. She received a master's degree from Oklahoma State University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. She met Angie Debo while both were working for the Oklahoma American Civil Liberties Union. Dr. Valencia-Weber served as Director of the Indian Law Certificate Program at the University of New Mexico School of Law from 1994 until Fall 2002. She remains at the University of New Mexico teaching as a full tenured professor.

Glenna Matthews possesses history degrees from San Jose State (B.A.) and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Stanford University. Her first academic position was in the History Department at Oklahoma State University. She continued her academic career at the University of California, Berkeley. Matthews is the author of "Just a Housewife" The Rise and Fall of Domesticity in America (Oxford UP, 1987), The Rise of Public Woman: Woman's Power and Woman's Place in the United States, 1630-1970 (Oxford UP, 1992), and co-author of Running as a Woman: Gender and Power in American Politics (The Free Press, 1994).
