NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy : Repositories: where to share your data
All NIH grant proposals submitted on January 25, 2023 and beyond will be required to include a data management and sharing plan.
NIH guidance on repositories
- Supplemental Information to the NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing: Selecting a Repository for Data Resulting from NIH-Supported ResearchThis is the official guidance document to start with when considering what repository to use. It outlines the priorities of what to consider when chosing a repository, as well as broad issues of repository characteristics.
- NIH list of discipline or data-type specific repositories, supporting effective data discovery and reuseIf a funding mechanism or Institute doesn't specify a specific repository to use, next priority should go to a discipline-specific or data-type-specific respository such as these.
- Institutional repository: OROOption 2.B. of the guidance on repository selection mentions Institutional Repositories. At OSU, our institutional repository is called Open Research Oklahoma (ORO).
- NIH list of generalist data repositoriesOption 2.B. of the guidance on selecting a repository offers these data repositories as established options for data sharing when no discipline-specific repository will fit the study.
- Pubmed for data: Adding small datasets in Pubmed CentralThis link provides directions for sharing supplementary files with a Pubmed Central deposit. A moderate amount of data in common formats (image collections, spreadsheets, text) may be added to articles in Pubmed Central as a supplementary material. The PMC file with the data as supplementary material is an appropriate repository for the new data sharing policy.
Finding an Online Repository
Repository registries may be searched to locate an appropriate repository if none are listed.
- Registry of Research Data Repositories (re3data.org)re3data.org is a global registry of research data repositories. The registry covers research data repositories from different academic disciplines. re3data.org presents repositories for the permanent storage and access of data sets to researchers, funding bodies, publishers and scholarly institutions. re3data.org aims to promote a culture of sharing, increased access and better visibility of research data.
