Book Reviews Gathered: CLCD
Children's Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD)
Useful for finding and evaluating children's books AND professional books for educators. Compiles 300,000+ critical reviews from trade and professional journals (notably NOT Horn Book Magazine or Guide). Also includes awards, reading levels, genres, and some links to lesson plans or study guides. Search by author, title, date, genre, reading level, grade level, and other facets. Monthly features: themed book lists, apps of the month, and author/illustrator interviews.
Now available to OSU students for one year after graduation for those who register a user account with CLCD before graduation.
NOTE: For access off-campus, students and faculty must go first to the OSU Library's Database page to authenticate your access.
Book Reviews in Journals
- ALAN ReviewA peer-reviewed journal about adolescent (young adult or YA) literature and teaching it. Themed issues, with critiques and surveys, research, author interviews, and "Clip & File" book reviews (on heavy paper). Published by NCTE's Assembly on Literature for Adolescents.
- Booklist (BL)A library trade journal primarily for book reviews, both adults and youth. Includes themed booklists ("Spotlight on..."), author interviews, and hot lists. BL reviews are often included on Amazon.com.
- Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books (BCCB)One of the nation’s leading children’s book review journals for school and public librarians. Provides concise summaries and critical evaluations to help you find the books you need for your library’s collection. Current issues are online only.
- Children's Literature ReviewSignificant overviews of and literary criticism about children's and adolescent (young adult, YA) literature, both recent and older titles. Available both in print (older volumes) and online.
- Horn Book MagazineTrade journals with outstanding articles and longer reviews, most of which are recommendations. Includes notes about recent awards in children's literature. July/August issue features articles about the recent winners of top awards, especially the Caldecott, Newbery, and Coretta Scott King. NOTE: Horn Book reviews are NOT included in the CLCD database.
