Managing Research Data

Managing Research Data: Generalist Repositories

Introduction

Generalist data repositories can be a good option for data sharing if there are no domain- or discipline-specific data repositories available that meet researchers' needs. Generalist repositories will (for the most part) accept all kinds of data types, formats, and content from any research discipline. Several common generalist repositories are outlined on this page.

Open Science Framework (OSF)

OSF is both a project management platform and a repository, so users can keep the contents of their OSF projects private during the active phase of research and then publish that content when the project is complete and/or an article is published. The following list includes some features of OSF that may help you decide whether it is a good solution for your needs:

  • Free and open source
  • Provides DOIs
  • 50 GB limit for public projects and components; 5 GB limit for private projects and components
    • OSF support storage add-ons (e.g., connections to Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive) do not count toward these limits
    • Users can also purchase additional storage if needed
  • Offers many licensing options (e.g., CC0, CC-BY 4.0), including custom licenses
  • Users can share an anonymized view-only link to their project if needed for blinded peer review
  • OSU is an OSF Member Institution, so OSU users can log in with their okey information
    • When signing in, select "Sign in via institution" and select "Oklahoma State University" from the dropdown menu

Zenodo

Zenodo is a data repository operated by CERN. The following list includes some features of Zenodo that may help you decide whether it is a good solution for your needs:

  • Free and open source
  • Provides DOIs
  • Default storage limit is 50 GB per dataset
    • Note: high volume deposits (greater than 50 GB) may be allowed but require special approval from Zenodo
  • Offers many licensing options for data
  • Users can share a secret link to their Zenodo record to provide access, but this is not anonymized
  • Content may be embargoed or placed under restricted access

Dryad

The following list includes some features of Dryad that may help you decide whether it is a good solution for your needs:

  • Has a deposit fee, but some publishers or journals may cover this fee for authors
    • Dryad has data curators who check that submitted data and metadata meet Dryad's requirements
  • Provides DOIs
  • 2 TB limit per data publication, with a request that individual files not exceed 10 GB
  • All data licensed as CC0 (public domain)
    • Dryad partners with Zenodo for the hosting of software packages and other content that need licensing other than CC0
  • Users can share a private for peer review link that enables double-blinded peer review

Figshare

The following list includes some features of Figshare that may help you decide whether it is a good solution for your needs:

  • Free up to 20 GB
    • Figshare Plus is a paid option that supports larger data deposits
  • Provides DOIs
  • Default, free storage limit is 20 GB of private storage
  • Offers many licensing options for data
  • Users can share a private, anonymized link for blind peer review
  • Content may be embargoed
