Linguistics and Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL): Databases for Journal Articles
Databases of Linguistics and TESL Research (Journal Articles)
The following databases are useful for finding journal articles and other research sources various aspects of language, linguistics, TESL, and the psychological and social dimensions of language. Many contain full-text articles, or have links to full-text or to document delivery request forms via Article Linker (). You will need to log in with your OSU email address and O-Key password to access these databases off-campus. Click HERE to log in.
Links to dissertations and theses submitted at OSU (as well as dissertations from most major US universities) are also included in the list of databases.
- MLA International Bibliographyincludes journal articles, books, book chapters, and dissertations on literature, folklore, as well as many aspects of linguistics and language. It covers TESL and foreign language teaching, and the history of languages. There are many full-text journal articles and the database goes back to the 1963.
- ScienceDirectScience Direct is a preeminent scientific database from the publisher Elsevier. The social sciences and humanities section contains many journals on linguistics, psycholinguistics, language and neuroscience, language learning, and technical communication. It has full-text, peer-reviewed journal articles and the full text of other Elsevier publications (e-books and reference e-books).
- JSTORhas full-text articles from back issues of selected language and linguistics journals ranging approximately from the 1950s to the 2000s
- Project MUSEFull-text journals articles in the humanities and social sciences, including many on language and lingusitics. Coverage is from the 1990s and early 2000s to the present.
- ERIC (EBSCO interface)covers all aspects of education including TESL, language instruction, and composition/writing instruction. It has many full-text journal articles and links to PDFs for reports and other professional papers made available through the ERIC document clearinghouse. HINT: In ERIC, for articles on TESL, type the code English Second Language or Second Language Instruction or Second Language Learning in the search box and select "SU Subject" in the drop-down menu one of the search boxes, and then add additional keywords.
- Google ScholarOff campus, use this link or the one under Databases accessed from the OSU Library homepage to log in with O-Key and get full text of journal articles in journals to which we subscribe online.
- ProQuest Dissertations & Theses GlobalFull-text dissertations from US universities, most from 1997 to the present. The full text of OSU dissertations is available from 1961 to the present.
- Linguistics and Language Behavior AbstractsLLBA covers all aspects of the study of language including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. Complete coverage is also given to various fields of linguistics including descriptive, historical, comparative, theoretical and geographical linguistics. Indexing covers over 1,200 serials, with links to full-text of articles in hundreds of journals. Coverage from 1973 to present.
- OSU Theses and DissrtationsAnother platform for finding OSU doctoral dissertations as well as Masters theses from many OSU programs.

The following databases are from other, related fields to linguistics and TESL:
- PsycINFOPsychological research database from the American Psychological Association. Includes journal articles, books, and dissertations on psycholinguistics, the psychology of language, and other related topics.
- Sociological Abstractscontains articles on language and social issues, sociolinguistics, second language issues, and other related social aspects of linguistics.
General Databases
The following are general library databases with some full-text articles from journals and other periodicals covering many subject areas. They are not specific to any one field, but are multidisciplinary and worth consulting along with the subject-specific databases listed above.
- ProQuest Research Libraryindexes over 4,700 journals, magazines, and newspapers many subject fields from approximately 1970 to the present, and includes full-text articles from over 3,300 journals
- Academic Search Premierfrom EBSCO has citations and abstracts from over 8,500 journals (4,600 with full-text articles) from 1975 to the present.
