Zotero: Other Citation Management Tools

Information about the free online citation and research management tool Zotero

Alternatives to Zotero

Zotero is a free, open-source citation management tool with years of excellent support and development behind it. While OSU Library offers comprehensive support for Zotero, our students, staff, and faculty are welcome to use any citation management tool that meets their needs.

Why We Prefer Zotero

  • Free: OSU does not pay any subscription or storage costs to Zotero, nor do you as a student, staff, or faculty member have any connection to Zotero through OSU email, OKEY account, etc. Should you desire to purchase additional storage, you may do so as an individual, but the University does not pay any amount for Zotero at this moment. See our page on how to manage Zotero storage if you have questions.
  • Open Source: Zotero's development is transparent and community-driven
  • High Quality: Robust features comparable to expensive commercial alternatives
  • Portable: Your Zotero library stays with you beyond your time at OSU
  • Accessible: Works across all major operating systems and browsers and does not depend on proprietary file types.

Our library staff can provide training and support for using Zotero in your research and academic writing, but we recognize that other tools may better suit individual workflows. Here are a few of them:
