Error Codes in Microsoft Word after Uninstalling EndNote

Once you have uninstalled EndNote and the Microsoft Word add-in, you might notice errors in your Word documents with EndNote references. You can solve this error by taking the following steps depending on your operating system.

If your Word document suddenly shows {ADDIN EN.CITE} codes, it's probably because your Word has turned on the "Show field codes instead of their values" in Word > Options > Advanced > "Show document content" section.

The quickest way to fix this is to use the Word shortcut keys for turning off this setting.

Press ALT+F9 (Option+F9 on Mac) on your keyboard to turn off this setting in your Word. If you are still seeing the codes, proceed with the longer steps below.

Windows

Word 2007/2010/2013/2016
  1. Word 2007: Choose Office button (top left) > Word Options (bottom).
Word 2010/2013/2016: Choose File > Options.
  2. Choose Advanced (left menu) and scroll down to the section titled "Show Document Content."
  3. Uncheck the item titled "Show field codes instead of their values" and click OK.

The document should now appear normal.

Word 2000/2002(XP)/2003

  2. Choose View (tab) and uncheck "Field Codes".
  3. Click OK.

On a Macintosh

  1. Choose Word > Preferences.
  2. Choose View and uncheck the box named "Field Codes".
  3. Click OK.

The document should now appear normal and the citations will be editable as normal text.
